Project ELITE

Empowering Librarians to Integrate Technology in Education

I’ve recently become a member of Project Elite. Don’t know what that is? That’s OK. We are still feeling our way ourselves.

Project Elite was begun by the Department of Libraries, part of the Chicago Public Schools. Its goal is to provide professional knowledge and support for CPS librarians to effectively integrate technology in their teaching and educational activities. Sixteen CPS librarians have been chosen to be trained to use various technologies as tools for themselves as well as teaching students.

I’m very excited to be a part of this first group of librarians. I look forward to learning about new technology and especially using this technology with my students.

Being in this first group means we will become the standard. This is an overwhelming responsibility.  If we do well, we will inspire others and give a powerful meaning behind the new designation “Elite Librarian.” However, if we can’t translate our new skills into student learning, the term “Elite Librarian” will be meaningless, or worse, mean an uninspiring teacher bent on keeping the students quiet, controlled and completing a worksheet.

Being a leader is always a challenge,  but its what we signed up for. Wish me luck.
